Stomp Out Suicide

About This Project

Stomp Out Suicide (SOS) was a Twin Cities-based nonprofit dedicated to suicide prevention and mental health awareness.

SOS’s original website used a proprietary content management system provided by their web host. It was complicated and clunky. It did not have the functionality the organization needed to move forward. At our very first meeting, we decided it was time to update to WordPress and a responsive template.

Angie King from King Content was also an SOS board member. Together, we worked on a new content strategy and wireframes for the website.

While Angie worked on messaging and copy, I created the visual design of the site based on SOS’s existing print collateral. Together with the client, we evaluated what we liked and what we needed to improve. As we pulled together more ideas, a color story and photo style started to evolve.

SOS has a serious mission, but we chose to use colors and images that spoke optimistically to high school and college students.

Raising awareness. Increasing engagement.

The final result was a responsive, reorganized website that was beautiful and engaging. Almost 2,000 people attended the 2015 5K Run/Walk — an event record!

Websites change over time

In 2017, SOS became part of Canvas Health. The website is now maintained by their internal team and the design featured above has changed over time.
